Plex: link once, watch for years.
SurfRewind uses Plex’s standard device link. No Plex Pass is required, and SurfRewind never sees your Plex password.
Link your account
- Open SurfRewind and choose Plex.
- Scan the QR code with your phone, or go to plex.tv/link and enter the four-letter code shown on screen.
- Pick a server. Servers shared with you appear too, with the permissions their owner gave you.
- Pick the movie and TV libraries you want on television, then Start my channels.
What SurfRewind reads
Titles, episode numbers, years, genres, content ratings, collections and durations — the metadata Plex already has. Good metadata makes good channels: shows with season and episode numbers play in order, collections become their own stations, and ratings let the parental PIN know which channels are mature. Fix a title in Plex and the change shows up after the next scan (nightly by default, or Refresh library in Settings).
Playback
SurfRewind asks Plex for the stream the way a normal client does. Most files direct-play; Plex transcodes only when the TV cannot play the file. 4K and HDR depend on your device and your server; they are not certified.
Your own commercials from Plex
Put clips you have permission to use in a separate Plex Other Videos library and point SurfRewind at it. Details.
Unlinking
Settings → Library → Choose libraries or sign out. You can also remove the SurfRewind device from your Plex account’s authorized devices at any time.
